The Art of RE-Membering How to Be Human
michigan real estate
*April is Fair Housing Month in the Real Estate Community. Reflections on what this means today.

As the keynote speaker got up to speak during the West Michigan Center for Fair Housing luncheon this week, a projection of a public lynching emerged on the screen. A jarring image in any setting. I wondered where he was going with this…

My gaze was drawn to the two figures who were hanging by nooses from the tree. But the speaker drew the attention of the audience to the crowd underneath the tree. A large group of well dressed citizens, some of them with smiles on their faces. Two young teenagers hanging dead from a tree was a community social event!

This gruesome chapter in American history is one many of us would prefer no to re-read. But beyond the imagery preserved in historic photographs, prints and yes…even postcards, there is an on-going issue of pain and its consequences both for the perpetrator and the victim.

While the American story of opportunity and promise is a shining beacon of hope to many around the world, the underbelly of this story has a dark side. History reveals that fear, rage and the desire to increase or maintain power were often the driving forces behind the most heinous acts of racial injustice.

Pain is something we prefer to avoid. We fight it, medicate it, sometimes ignore it, and often strike out and wound again because of it. However, the pain of the past has the capacity to serve as more than a stark reminder of our failings as individuals within community. The fact that we recoil and want to move on indicates that we know that all is not yet well.

This is the challenge we face as a country today. The pain of racism has taken on camouflage. The refusal or inability to deal with the constraints which tempt us to devalue and deny the dignity of another human being now threaten to undermine our capacity to live as fully human. And to recognize the divine spark that exists in every ‘other’ who exists alongside us.

The reason why we must examine issues of Fairness in Housing and our explicit or implicit participation is that ultimately we cannot afford not to. We cannot afford to ignore the gift and extinguish the hope of others simply because they are not like us. For in doing so, we are denying the basis of our own humanity. We hijack the promise which lies dormant within the potential of every human being.

Awareness is our hope. It is through awareness that we slowly begin to discover who we are and to see ourselves in the likeness of ‘the other’. We re-awaken to the fact that we ARE the other.

Real Estate Auction 2005

I was stunned at the prices these were going for . . . I owned lots in the areas and thought I was going to be a millionaire, lol. Unfortunately, I held on to my vacant land as an asset to sell as needed, now I can't afford the taxes. Now, I realize that it's bad karma to hold onto a lot of vacant land, the land should be used.

This brochure has been drifting around my office as a reminder. I want to contact a business friend in regards the people I know who profited from selling land at this auction . . . wonder how they are doing now. The (super-good-looking/healthy) friend had 4-children and a lovely wife.

Map link shows where the auction was, the hotel is now becoming student condos, it was completely gutted . . . wonder what the (mapped) convention center will become.

dealing with the collapse
michigan real estate
I just returned from visiting family in south Florida. They are experiencing a collapse in real estate that, in some measures, is more severe than Detroit. What is troubling for the sunshine destinations is their economy seems to be premised mostly on people moving in. They don’t really make anything in south Florida and this time the troubles in the rust belt are so severe we are not providing the grist for their economy- people with U- Hauls. Pull up a barstool and I’ll lay out my solution to get both economies humming right along.

The fine folks in Miami, Tampa, Phoenix, et al raise taxes and cut services. Instead of paying off their debts we get the sharpies on Wall Street to dust off their Credit Default Swap playbook and create some new AAA rated (wink, wink) bonds to hustle on unsuspecting, and way too trusting, European bankers. The state Treasurers in Florida, Arizona, Georgia and Nevada go on a spending spree buying up Michigan real estate. Before you know it we are back in the roaring Nineties and our underwater mortgages now have big fat equities. Since we are in on the scheme, we sell instead of remortgage. We pack up our earthly possessions in a U- Haul and head south. Our buying activity drives up real estate prices in the South. Tax revenues go up. Government bank accounts are overflowing. Collective bargaining is restored and we have full employment. Here’s the really cool part, it costs us nothing. You see the clever crew in Downtown Manhattan sold our state Governments credit default swaps at the same time they pinned the Confederate bonds on the banks overseas. We will actually make a profit when we default on the bonds! No worries about some little European Republic sending their hired goons to collect, our hired goons have nuclear weapons. Call it financial kryptonite.

Isn’t this easier and less painful then listening to political hacks drone on about entitlements, taxes and discretionary spending?

History of the Signorello Estate Winery:

Starting the Venture
Ray Signorello Jr. began his journey as winemaker and vineyard owner in the Napa Valley during the mid 1980's. Ray, born in San Francisco, California, moved to Vancouver, Canada where the Signorello family continues to maintain a home. Ray divides his time between Napa, San Francisco, Vancouver and business related travel. Ray's father, Ray Sr., initiated the vineyard project during the mid 1970's by purchasing the 100-acre estate located on the Silverado Trail in the beautiful Napa Valley. Ray Sr. worked side by side with Ray Jr., establishing the winery's reputation for excellence until his passing in the fall of 1998.

No Turning Back
Signorellos' original plan was to grow quality grapes to sell to existing wineries, but the harvest of 1985 changed this plan into a new level of evolvement. The bountiful crop allowed Signorellos to custom crush the excess grapes. This opportunity demonstrated what fabulous wine their vineyards were capable of producing. The project continues to grow, as do the spectacular 42 acres planted in several different varietals. Ray's continuing effort represents the invested energies that created this reality from a dream.

In 1986 the Signorellos began the second phase of the venture, this was the building of the main winery structure. This beautiful building is used for barrel storage, wine tasting and retail sales. Along with the building of the winery, wine production was expanded to include Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. By the end of the 1980's the Signorello family was thoroughly committed to making wine as well as growing grapes.

The decade of the nineties proved to be pivotal for Signorello Estate. In 1990 the first planting of red varietals began on the property- Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah.

What brought the Signorellos to the Napa Valley was the romantic side of winemaking; growing grapes, working the land, and enjoying the wine country lifestyle of camaraderie, good wine and great meals. While the Valley lifestyle is a very real part of the business, there is a serious responsibility to making a dream become a reality, both father and son realized this fact early in the endeavor.

This venture was a dream; now it is reality.

Talking with Timothy Manley
real estate jobs
I was looking forward to a long night of street shooting on Saturday night.

Things started off slow... I'd had a tough week... a lot of conflict... I wasn't feelin' it... I wasn't making contact with the 'street.'

It was my attitude... my mindset.

You can't connect with people when you're feeling like that.

I needed an 'adjustment.'

Somehow fate that night led me to meet Timothy Manley.

Let me tell you that I'm truly grateful for that encounter.

Timothy Manley talked some sense into me... he helped me to fix my attitude and our long and soulful conversation touched me deep inside my psyche.

TImothy Manley lives on Michigan Avenue.

Some of the priciest real estate on earth.

He sleeps on two milk crates.

I've always said that 'I don't shoot the homeless.'

I don't want to create images of people down on their luck.

TImothy Manley isn't down on his luck... he's right around the corner from a breakthrough.

I could feel it last night and so could he.

Timothy's been homeless for three hundred and ninety five days on the night that we met.

He's got it written down in his bible.

When I met him I had no idea he was homeless.

He was perfectly dressed... better than me actually... impeccably groomed... he's a very proud man.

I told Timothy that he smelled good... 'that's my cologne... I get it from Macy's' he said 'the testers... they're free.'

He 'bathes' in the sink at a fast food place every day.

I'm completely inspired by this guy... I'm inspired by how he can keep his attitude so positive in the face of the existence he's living at the moment.

What he's going through would crush most people like an empty aluminum can underneath the foot of an angry elephant.

It hasn't crushed Timothy Manley.

I believe this guy's right around the corner from turning things around.

I told him he needs to write a book... to share the lessons he's learned living on the street with everyone in these tough times.

Those lessons helped me right there.

He won't sleep at the shelter.

'They have bedbugs there' he said.

I asked him what the hardest thing about life for him right now was.

'Asking people for money... I just want a job.'

And his reading glasses are broken... he needs new reading glasses. And a bus pass.

He asked me to help him out with dinner but I didn't have any cash... so I asked him what he wanted to eat.

'Mac Donalds double Fillet-O-Fish sandwich' he said.

'Let's go man' I replied.

We walked six or seven blocks to the McDonalds talking all the way.

It was a fascinating and inspiring conversation... both ways and at dinner.

I was feelin' down about some things in my life and my talk with Timothy set me straight.

Dinner was the least I could do and I would have taken him anywhere.

When I paid at the McDonalds a check for ,000 fell out of my pocket and onto the floor... Timothy picked it up... looked at it and handed it back to me.

He's a decent and honest man.

I'd really like to help him get a job.

I'd like to see the man have a bed and a roof.

The guy is intelligent and he'd be great in a position where he worked with the public... he's very well spoken and he's got the 'magic mojo.'

We spent almost two hours talking and eating together.

Timothy Manley... I've got a feeling that things are gonna change for you my friend.

It truly was my pleasure to make your acquaintence.

You're a good man.

You need to write that book.

Thanks for everything.

The daze of wine and sand...One way to remember Venice, California of the sixties. There was always something happening somewhere in town or on the beach. There was the Gashouse, the Venice West Cafe, the Rendevoux or Merry-Go-Round bar. Finding a place to stay in Venice was never a problem. And once one had a job, the selection of places was much better.
