Monte-Carlo

Monte Carlo (French: Monte-Carlo, Occitan: Montcarles, Monégasque: Monte-Carlu) is one of Monaco's administrative areas. The official capital is the city of Monaco, which is coterminous with the country itself.
Monte Carlo is widely known for its casino. The permanent population is about 3,000. Monte Carlo quarter includes not only Monte Carlo proper where the Le Grand Casino is located, it also includes the neighbourhoods of Saint-Michel, Saint-Roman/Tenao, and the beach community of Larvotto. It borders the French town of Beausoleil (sometimes referred to as Monte-Carlo-Supérieur).

Founded in 1866, Monte Carlo has a name of Italian origin meaning "Mount Charles", in honor of the then-reigning prince, Charles III of Monaco. The specific mountain is the escarpment at the foot of the Maritime Alps on which the town stands.

The history of the area and the ruling Grimaldi family, however, dates back centuries. The port of Monaco is first mentioned in historical records as early as 43 BC, when Julius Caesar concentrated his fleet there while waiting in vain for Pompey. In the 12th century, the area fell under the sovereignty of Genoa, which was granted the entire coastline from Porto Venere to Monaco. After much conflict, the Grimaldis regained the rock in 1295, but suffered a significant amount of opposition in the ensuing years. In 1506 the Monegasques, under Lucien, Lord of Monaco, were under siege for some four months by the Genoan army, which had ten times the number of men. Monaco officially received full autonomy in 1524, but experienced difficulty retaining power, and on occasions briefly fell under the domination of Spain, Sardinia, and France.

By the 1850s, Monaco’s reigning family was almost bankrupt; this was a result of the loss of two towns, Menton and Roquebrune, which had provided most of the principality’s revenues with their lemon, orange and olive crops.[3] At the time, a number of small towns in Europe were growing prosperous from the establishment of casinos, notably in German towns such as Baden-Baden and Homburg[disambiguation needed]. In 1856, Charles III of Monaco granted a concession to Napoleon Langlois and Albert Aubert to establish a sea-bathing facility for the treatment of various diseases, and to build a German-style casino in Monaco.[3] The initial casino was opened in La Condamine in 1862, but was not a success; its present location in the area called "Les Spelugues" (The Caves) of Monte Carlo, came only after several relocations in the years that followed. The success of the casino grew slowly, largely due to the area's inaccessibility from much of Europe. The installation of the railway in 1868, however, brought with it an influx of people into Monte Carlo and saw it grow in wealth.[3]

In 1911, when the Constitution divided the principality of Monaco in 3 municipalities, the municipality of Monte Carlo was created covering the existing neighborhoods of La Rousse / Saint Roman, Larvotto / Bas Moulins and Saint Michel. The municipalities were merged into one in 1917, after accusations that the government was acting according to the motto "divide and conquer" and they were accorded the status of wards (quartiers) thereafter. Today, Monaco is divided into 10 wards, with an eleventh ward planned (but currently postponed) to encompass land reclaimed from the sea (see the "Administrative Divisions" section of Monaco for additional details).

The quarter of Monte Carlo was served by tramways from 1900 to 1953, linking all parts of Monaco. In 2003, a new cruise ship pier was completed in the harbour at Monte Carlo.

History of the Signorello Estate Winery:

Starting the Venture
Ray Signorello Jr. began his journey as winemaker and vineyard owner in the Napa Valley during the mid 1980's. Ray, born in San Francisco, California, moved to Vancouver, Canada where the Signorello family continues to maintain a home. Ray divides his time between Napa, San Francisco, Vancouver and business related travel. Ray's father, Ray Sr., initiated the vineyard project during the mid 1970's by purchasing the 100-acre estate located on the Silverado Trail in the beautiful Napa Valley. Ray Sr. worked side by side with Ray Jr., establishing the winery's reputation for excellence until his passing in the fall of 1998.

No Turning Back
Signorellos' original plan was to grow quality grapes to sell to existing wineries, but the harvest of 1985 changed this plan into a new level of evolvement. The bountiful crop allowed Signorellos to custom crush the excess grapes. This opportunity demonstrated what fabulous wine their vineyards were capable of producing. The project continues to grow, as do the spectacular 42 acres planted in several different varietals. Ray's continuing effort represents the invested energies that created this reality from a dream.

In 1986 the Signorellos began the second phase of the venture, this was the building of the main winery structure. This beautiful building is used for barrel storage, wine tasting and retail sales. Along with the building of the winery, wine production was expanded to include Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. By the end of the 1980's the Signorello family was thoroughly committed to making wine as well as growing grapes.

The decade of the nineties proved to be pivotal for Signorello Estate. In 1990 the first planting of red varietals began on the property- Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah.

What brought the Signorellos to the Napa Valley was the romantic side of winemaking; growing grapes, working the land, and enjoying the wine country lifestyle of camaraderie, good wine and great meals. While the Valley lifestyle is a very real part of the business, there is a serious responsibility to making a dream become a reality, both father and son realized this fact early in the endeavor.

This venture was a dream; now it is reality.

William T. Underwood
minnesota real estate
William T. Underwood is one of the youngest of the iron-makers of the United states, and none are better known among those who sustain the new-born fame of Alabama in the great iron markets than he. The industrial civilization of our times is a moral and intellectual plane upon which strong men dispose great events. Leaders play their parts there as surely as in the eras of war, or discovery, or political reform. There are subjects to be moved upon that plane, under the most enlarged theories of offensive and defensive combination, regulated, withal, by the most advanced principles of social and political development. The widening influence of commerce; the refinement of thought, put in motion by the steam-driven machine ; the cultivation of personal honor, in the realm of banking ; the elevated manhood of labor are among the subjects, of which we speak, and whose disposition the modern business man is brought to contemplate and appreciate.

The personal elements of character which insure Mr. Underwood's high rank in his chosen sphere of life are the strictest integrity and directness of conduct, promptness and energy in methods, intelligence in opinions, ready accessibility and unvarying courtesy of intercourse. He is a business man, thoroughly identified with the life of the people among whom he lives.

W. T. Underwood was born in Nashville, Tenn., July 24, 1848. He is descended from an English colonist, who settled in Goocliland County, Virginia, as a planter toward the middle of the eighteenth century. Joseph R. Underwood, grandfather of William T., emigrated from Virginia to Kentucky in his youth. His name is honorably connected with the history of his adopted State He served as a soldier in the war of 1812. He represented one of the Kentucky districts in the lower house of Congress, and represented the State in the Senate. He was a lawyer of great distinction, and served as one of the judges of the court of appeals of that State.

The father, Eugene Underwood, is now a large farmer and land owner in Warren County, Kentucky. He was for several years a practicing lawyer at Nashville, Tenn. He was one of the originators of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, and one of its first directors.

William T. was carried to Louisville, Ky., by his father, after the death of his mother in Nashville, and there placed in the public schools. From these he was advanced to the Forest Academy, near the city. Having been well educated, Mr. Underwood read law, and was admitted to the bar, but never practiced the profession. He soon left Louisville to enter into land operations in Minnesota, and there became associated with influential men. His efforts in the West were altogether successful and satisfactory. In 1871 he took up his residence again in Louisville, but even then he continued to buy and sell the lands of Minnesota and other Western States and Territories, to examine titles and negotiate loans.

In 1882 Mr. Underwood was induced to come to Birmingham. He saw at once the marvelous opportunities here open to energy and capital well directed. He resolved to remain permanently, and then associated himself with Mr. H. F. De Bardeleben and others in founding the Mary Pratt Furnace Company.

Mr. Underwood has disposed of much of his possessions in other States to concentrate them at Birmingham. He is now a large investor in manufactories and real estate in and near the city. He is a director of the First National Bank, and president of the Mary Pratt Furnace Company, whose affairs he manages with distinguished capacity and success. He refused a nomination to the legislature at the August, 1886, election.

Mr. Underwood's mother, Catharine Underwood, nee Thompson, who died when he was ten years old, was a daughter of a lawyer of note, William Thompson, of Nashville.

In 1871 William T. Underwood and Miss Miranda B. Wilder, daughter of Oscar Wilder, a Louisville gentleman of wealth, were married. They lost their only child, a son, born to them in Birmingham. Mrs. Underwood is a very active promoter of the interests of the Episcopal Church, of which she is a member, and of practical charities of various kinds in the city. Mr. Underwood is a member of both the Masonic and Odd Fellow fraternities.

1968 Lamborghini Miura Roadster Prototype (01)
san diego real estate
The Lamborghini Miura was a sports car produced by Italian automaker Lamborghini between 1966 and 1972. The car is widely considered to have begun the trend of high performance, two-seater, mid-engined sports cars.[3] At launch, it was the fastest production road car available.

The Miura Roadster (actually more of a targa-model, but without any removable roof) was built by Bertone as a show car. Based on a P400, it was first shown at the 1968 Brussels Auto Show. After having been exhibited at several auto salons the car was sold to the International Lead Zinc Research Organization (ILZRO) who turned it into a display-vehicle showcasing the possibilities of using zinc alloys in cars. The car was named the ZN75. A few other Miuras have had their tops removed, but this Bertone Miura Roadster was the only factory open-top Miura.

In 2006 the ZN75 was purchased by New York City real estate developer Adam Gordon. Gordon had Bobilff Motorcars in San Diego, California return the car to its original Bertone Roadster form. The restored car was first shown in August 2008 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Yoder-Walker House, New Castle 3

A few nice pennsylvania real estate images I found:

Yoder-Walker House, New Castle 3
pennsylvania real estate
At present, I’m mostly inactive on Flickr for an indefinite period of time. However, I will continue posting photos. I am always appreciative of views and comments; thank you for taking time to look.

The Yoder-Walker House in New Castle, Craig County, Virginia, has an enviable view, situated on a hill with the town of New Castle spread out below and an expansive view of Craig Creek Valley. It’s a fascinating Queen Anne, built about 1890 by William Larose Yoder (1830-1900), formerly of Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, who apparently came to New Castle during the 1890s to participate in the exploitation of the county's mineral reserves. He was also involved in real estate development and speculation. Later it was the residence of Ed Lee Walker, a general merchant and druggist in New Castle in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

With the numerous trees (and taken in bad light), this was a challenging house—unfortunately many details are not visible. The house is a 2-story brick structure (and according to the National Register of Historic Places [NRHP] nomination form, provided by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources [VDHR], double-pile brick, 7 course American bond with black penciling). The foundation is stone but faced with rock. It has a complex hipped roof with brick chimneys and numerous gabled dormers—the dormers sides are decorated with pressed metal sheathing in a floral pattern. The windows are 1/1 sash with segmental arched lintels, stone sills and shutters which are louvered and paneled. At the rear is a 2-story side porch with square balusters, and the upper level shows off the millwork with arched wooden spandrels and spindles. There are bay windows facing the porch and bay windows adjoining the 2-story rear porch. The porch entrance is pedimented decorated with a linear pattern inside a triangle; it’s flanked by two Doric-inspired columns on each side. The porch is a wraparound, the roof supported by a series of columns. The entry has two doors. Above the porch is a small balcony (screened in) with molded and chamfered posts and more pressed metal, this time with a diamond-pattern (a quilted look).

The nomination form also provides some information on interior details. Apparently there are also many stained-glass windows with a variety of shaped, but I didn’t see any. It is part of the New Castle Historic District (the 1993 boundary increase) National Register ID #93000497.

Further information is in the NRHP nomination form located at www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/Counties/Craig/268-0016_Ne...

Highland Building
pennsylvania real estate
Like the dowtown Frick Building www.flickr.com/photos/29023375@N04/5829476559/, the Highland Building is another Pittsburgh skyscraper architect Daniel Burnham designed for Henry Clay Frick in 1909.

From about 1850 to 1950, the East Liberty neighborhood was the third-largest business district in Pennsylvania, after Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, so it's no surprise that Frick, whose returns from real estate deals nearly matched the pile he made from his coke empire and with Carnegie Steel, would want to be where the action was.

In his book “Pittsburgh, A New Portrait,” University of Pittsburgh professor Franklin Toker writes that Burnham copied features from buildings by his bête noire, Louis Sullivan, who has been called the father of modern American architecture.

Sullivan didn’t hide his distaste for the Beaux-Arts “White City” Burnham helped realize for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Sullivan, who coined the term “form follows function,” wrote in his autobiography that Burnham set the course of American architecture back “for half a century from its date, if not longer.”

In designing the Highland Building, Toker writes that Burnham took the terra cotta ornament design from Sullivan's Carson Pirie Scott Department Store in Chicago, and Sullivan's Guaranty Building in Buffalo inspired the cornice.

This East Liberty landmark, which has stood empty for decades, has been the target of several redevelopment plans – all of which failed.

But recent efforts to turn it into a hotel are getting closer to fruition as state funding for a parking garage, which the potential developers say they need to make the plan viable, has been approved.

While definitive plans for the hotel conversion still haven’t been put forward, the future of the Highland Building is brighter than it has been in nearly 40 years.

Il Torrino - Borgo di Pietrafitta - Tuscany

Il Torrino used to be the defence tower of the original medieval settlement situated on the road between Florence and Rome. As such it is located a little above the hamlet itself.
The tower and building at its feet has been converted into a comfortable and original house for 6 people. Two single bedrooms, one with its own bath, are up in the tower. On the ground floor, not only living room and kitchen, but also both double bedrooms have french windows onto the garden.
Please note that guests have internet access in the office of the estate, not in the house.
