For Some, Housing Crisis Stress Is Unbearable
investing in real estate

NPR

It's only natural to worry as the value of homes and investments falls. But the financial crisis is hitting some people harder than others. In California, the housing meltdown started early. Over the past three months, a record number of Californians lost their homes to foreclosure.

And some of those financial losses are turning into human tragedies, as reports of suicide and other desperate behavior emerge.

Scott Harder lives on a quiet street in North Pasadena, in a neighborhood that is aptly named Bungalow Heaven. Small wood frame houses nestle under spreading shade trees. Residents visit on each others' porches and gossip in rockers. They check up on each other to make sure everything's all right.

But before dawn one recent morning, Harder woke up and smelled smoke coming from the home of his 53-year-old neighbor, Wanda Dunn. He quickly threw on some clothes and went next door to check on her. Their street was still quiet and dark.

"I went out front and looked at the front of her house," Harder said, "and could see plumes of smoke wafting across the street light."

Harder called 911. When emergency personnel arrived, they found Dunn's body in her rear bedroom. She'd apparently set her house afire and shot herself in the head. Dunn had been facing eviction from the only home she'd ever known.

Harder says he understood Dunn's anguish.

"She'd grown up in the house, from what I understand, and lived there her whole life, so it was all she had," Harder said. "I talked with another of the neighbors down the street, and through the grapevine he'd heard that she really didn't know what to do if she'd lost her house."

Dunn had inherited her bungalow from her family and lost it after she stopped working because of a disability; she had also made some bad financial decisions. The new owner let Dunn rent the yellow stucco bungalow, but he lost the house when the subprime meltdown sent all of California's real estate into a tailspin.

Homeowners Feeling Trapped

Beverly Hills psychologist Kenneth Siegel says Californians are especially attached to their residential real estate.

"California represented for many of us the pinnacle of the effects of hard work," Siegel said, "of the ability to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps."

Owning a home, Siegel said, "represented the physical manifestation of all we have done and how hard we have worked."

But Californians' dream of a modest detached home, Siegel says, often morphed into something far grander when the economic boom of the 1990s made home loans — many of them subprime — easier to come by.

"So here, as much as anyplace else, people did overbuy, their houses were bigger than their egos," Siegel said, "and they in fact invested more of themselves and more of their savings in them."

Dunn's suicide is the latest in a series of events that seem to be linked to financial problems. Shortly before Dunn's death, money manager Karthik Rajaram killed his wife, mother-in-law, three sons and himself inside the home they rented in an upscale Los Angeles suburb.

At a press conference, LAPD Deputy Chief Michael Moore explained the presumed motive.

"We believe that he has become despondent recently because of financial dealings and the financial situation in his household, and we think this is a direct result of that," Moore said.

Psychological Strains Of A Slump

"Loss is often a trigger — and there is more loss now that could trigger suicide among those that are already vulnerable," said Dr. Kita Curry.

Curry, a licensed clinical psychologist who heads the Didi Hirsch Community Mental Health Center in Los Angeles, says she has a gauge of how tough things are getting.

"Our 24-hour suicide prevention crisis line has seen an increase in calls, and it does seem to be partially fueled by anxiety and a sense of hopelessness and powerlessness," Curry said.

And middle-class status that once seemed a given isn't anymore. Scott Harder says there are more and more signs reading "BANK OWNED" popping up on his town's lawns — something he never thought he'd see.

"As this is happening in Pasadena — I think it's sort of shaking people to their core," Harder said.

Waiting Anxiously For A Recovery

Anxiety can be contagious, but Siegel says that taking the long view is a good antidote.

"The people who tend to believe that this is going to be for a long time, they're the ones that are feeding off the misery of the current situation," Siegel said. "So keep this in the perspective of, 'we're at a point in time, but only a point in time, and it's not likely to continue forever.' "

The people who feel that the slump could continue indefinitely, then, are those who are struggling to stay afloat until the economy recovers.

Signorello Estate Winery, Napa Valley, California, USA

History of the Signorello Estate Winery:

Starting the Venture
Ray Signorello Jr. began his journey as winemaker and vineyard owner in the Napa Valley during the mid 1980's. Ray, born in San Francisco, California, moved to Vancouver, Canada where the Signorello family continues to maintain a home. Ray divides his time between Napa, San Francisco, Vancouver and business related travel. Ray's father, Ray Sr., initiated the vineyard project during the mid 1970's by purchasing the 100-acre estate located on the Silverado Trail in the beautiful Napa Valley. Ray Sr. worked side by side with Ray Jr., establishing the winery's reputation for excellence until his passing in the fall of 1998.

No Turning Back
Signorellos' original plan was to grow quality grapes to sell to existing wineries, but the harvest of 1985 changed this plan into a new level of evolvement. The bountiful crop allowed Signorellos to custom crush the excess grapes. This opportunity demonstrated what fabulous wine their vineyards were capable of producing. The project continues to grow, as do the spectacular 42 acres planted in several different varietals. Ray's continuing effort represents the invested energies that created this reality from a dream.

In 1986 the Signorellos began the second phase of the venture, this was the building of the main winery structure. This beautiful building is used for barrel storage, wine tasting and retail sales. Along with the building of the winery, wine production was expanded to include Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. By the end of the 1980's the Signorello family was thoroughly committed to making wine as well as growing grapes.

The decade of the nineties proved to be pivotal for Signorello Estate. In 1990 the first planting of red varietals began on the property- Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah.

What brought the Signorellos to the Napa Valley was the romantic side of winemaking; growing grapes, working the land, and enjoying the wine country lifestyle of camaraderie, good wine and great meals. While the Valley lifestyle is a very real part of the business, there is a serious responsibility to making a dream become a reality, both father and son realized this fact early in the endeavor.

This venture was a dream; now it is reality.

NYC - East Village: Cooper Park - Peter Cooper Monument
real estate commission
Since the 19th century, this statue of Peter Cooper (1791–1883), a philanthropist, industrialist, and inventor, has watched over the park and school that bear his name. Cooper was a native New Yorker and workingman’s son who, with less than a year of formal schooling, became one of the most successful American businessmen of his day. He made his fortune in iron, glue, railroads, real estate, and communications. His inventions include the first trans-Atlantic telegraph cable and Tom Thumb, America’s first functioning steam engine. Cooper also invented Jell-o, with help from his wife, Sarah, who added fruit to his clarified gelatin.

Despite his many successful ventures, Cooper failed in an 1876 presidential bid on the Greenback ticket; he secured just 81,737 popular votes. The real contest was between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel Jones Tilden. Although Tilden won a majority of the popular vote, he was denied the presidency by a partisan Electoral Commission.

Cooper dedicated his life and wealth to philanthropy. He wanted to ensure that immigrants and children of the working class would have access to the education which he never received. He believed that education should be “as free as water or air,” and in 1859 he established the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, a coeducational college that continues to provide students with full-tuition scholarships in architecture, art, and engineering. Celebrated features of the institution included a free reading room and the Great Hall, the latter providing the setting for one of Abraham Lincoln’s most important speeches in which he established his anti-slavery platform. He delivered it on February 27, 1860 during his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

Following Cooper’s death in 1883, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the preeminent 19th century sculptor and one of the earliest alumni of Cooper Union (class of 1864), was commissioned to design a monument in honor of the great visionary. Saint-Gaudens collaborated with the renowned architect Stanford White who created the piece’s marble and granite canopy.

Saint-Gaudens was born in Dublin and came with his family to the United States that same year. Besides studying drawing at the Cooper Union, he also trained at the National Academy of Design in New York and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He returned to New York City in 1873, and in addition to the Cooper Monument he created such notable public works as Admiral Farragut in Madison Square Park, the Shaw Memorial on the Boston Common, and General Sherman in Manhattan’s Grand Army Plaza. A founding member of the National Sculpture Society in 1893, he also maintained a home and studio in Cornish, New Hampshire.

Saint-Gaudens labored for the Cooper Monument, completing 27 sketches of different versions before settling on the final impressive design. The monument committee raised ,000 in popular subscriptions, exceeding the construction cost of ,000, and expended the remainder on park beautification. The official dedication took place on May 29, 1897 at the northern end of Cooper Park.

The park was deeded to the City in 1828 for use as a public space by Charles H. Hall, a descendant of Governor Peter Stuyvesant. Named Stuyvesant Square at the time it was acquired by Parks in 1850, it was referred to as Fourth Avenue Park when it was first planted in the late 1870s, and renamed Cooper Park in 1883.

In 1935, coinciding with reconstruction of the park, the newly created Parks Monuments Crew, with funding from the federal Works Progress Administration, performed extensive repairs and cleaned the monument. The monument was again restored in 1987 under the Adopt-a-Monument Program, a joint project of the Municipal Art Society, the Art Commission, and Parks.

Ben Thompson, 1918
real estate commission
Image by UA Archives | Upper Arlington History
Ben Sells Thompson, one of the founders of Upper Arlington, was born in Georgetown, Ohio in 1879. As a young man, he moved to Mansfield and worked in the hardware business. Later he attended the engineering college at The Ohio State University. In 1907, Ben joined his brother, King Thompson, in the real estate business.

In 1913, Ben Thompson and his brother, King, purchased 840 acres of land from James Terrell Miller to develop an "ideal residential community for Columbus." The land appealed to the Thompsons as a residential site because of its location on high ground, its proximity to both downtown Columbus and The Ohio State University campus, and its position upwind from larger cities. The beautiful land that was once a "well-managed, immaculately kept, working farm" was subdivided into 2500 lots. In 1914 the King Thompson Company was formed to sell this new community to the public. In August of 1914, laborers and teams of horses were hired by the Thompson brothers to construct the first street, named Roxbury Road, leading into this pristine new subdivision. Ben Thompson's home, located on Cambridge Boulevard, was completed in 1916.

In 1917, the Upper Arlington Company was established, with King Thompson as president and Ben Thompson as vice president, to manage the streets, sewers, and water lines. Ben Thompson also served as president of the Northwest Boulevard Company, which deeded the land that was eventually used to construct Northwest Boulevard. This road, known by many Upper Arlington residents as a crucial step in the development of the village, provided a convenient route from Upper Arlington directly to downtown Columbus.

On March 20, 1918 the village of Upper Arlington, with two hundred residents, was incorporated. Before the establishment of a police force, Ben Thompson was elected to the "high office of Marshal of Upper Arlington" for which he took no salary. Ben and King Thompson were very active in the life of their new community, entertaining residents, sponsoring athletic competitions, and organizing holiday activities for the families. Ben Thompson was a member of the first Village Commission, an appointed member of the Upper Arlington Park Board, and served as treasurer of the Men's Brotherhood, predecessor of the Upper Arlington Civic Association. Ben Thompson later accepted a secretarial position with the Y.M.C.A., and was stationed overseas in that capacity.

Ben Thompson was married to the former Catherine Pinney, of Flint, Ohio, and the couple resided at 1919 Cambridge Boulevard. Mrs. Thompson served as chairwoman of the Upper Arlington Red Cross Unit, established in 1917, which met weekly to socialize, as well as to sew towels, hospital clothes, and bandages in their contribution to the war effort. In addition to his work in real estate, Ben Thompson was an outdoorsman who enjoyed baseball, hunting and fishing. Ben once gave a "short and very interesting account of his northern hunting trip and the methods and difficulties encountered in bagging a grizzly bear."

Balboa Island, Newport Beach, California

Balboa Island is an area of Newport Beach, California, actually comprising three modified or artificial islands in Newport Harbor. Balboa Island is one of the densest communities in Orange County. Approximately 3,000 residents live on just 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) giving it a population density of 17,621 person per square mile—higher than that of San Francisco.

Despite having some of the country's most expensive homes, most of the dwellings are on small lots. A lot size on Balboa Island is 35 feet x 85 feet. In 2008 "teardowns" on interior lots of that size were going for ,000,000.

The perimeter of the island along the Bayfront is dotted with piers for the homeowners' boats. Marine Avenue and Agate Avenue form the commercial spine of the island.

Balboa Island has developed into a close-knit community, home to professionals, families, retirees, students and celebrities.

Balboa Island is one of the most expensive real estate markets in North America outside of Lower Manhattan. A two-bedroom house with a water view from the living room can cost about million.

Local tradition has it that Balboa Island is where the frozen chocolate banana was first marketed. Snack shops on Marine Avenue will dip a frozen banana on a stick into chocolate sauce and dredge it in ground nuts or candy sprinkles.

Tourists from all over the world come to stay on the island in one of the many vacation rentals, year after year as tradition. They enjoy the summer days at the beach and evenings on the main street having dinner in the many restaurants, after dinner having their Balboa Bars at the ice cream shops and getting bags of saltwater taffy at the old fashioned candy store.

They enjoy the summer days at the beach and evenings on the main street having dinner in the many restaurants, after dinner having their Balboa Bars at the ice cream shops and getting bags of saltwater taffy at the old fashioned candy store.
