In the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon), a row of century-old bayan trees escaped the axe miraculously in one of the most expensive retail real estate areas in the world.
This is Nathan Road near Kowloon Park. I used to live not far from here and I grew up with these bayan trees. Anyone who lives in Tsim Sha Tsui would be very attached to these old trees.
The trees separate the very busy Nathan Road vehicular traffic from the pedestrians. To the right in the Park Lane Shoppers' Boulevard. One of the shops here, about 1,000 ft² (93m²) in size sold for HKD 0-million (EUR 18.6-million, USD .7-million, GBP £16.3-million) recently.
(Retail space in Hong Kong can go for so much because retail sales turnover is massive. Shops easily can have sales of millions, if not tens of millions, in any given month.)
