This is the shared front yard for a well designed urban neighborhood that works. Eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth century buildings form the frame for this famous public green space seen here with a typical late morning crowd on a weekday in late spring.
The politically influential both in England and the American colonies, the Berkeley family's 17th century suburban London estate was their seat close to the capital of an emerging mercantile empire. Their house and grounds gave way in the late 18th century to a real estate development planned and executed by the same Berkeley family.
This public square carries the name of the family that initially promoted it, gambling their home for what they hoped would be a profitable speculative real estate development. In this instance, it paid off handsomely.

This is off of Old Street, London. It seemed that they were used as a dwelling,there were curtains and stairs up but no sign. Anyway to get around the high cost of real estate here!!
